Bay to Breakers and Everything In Between

I would have never thought this prior to last Sunday, but I survived Bay to Breakers! I know, you say what an achievement Matt 'you ran a 12k, don't forget to collect your Purple Heart at the White House'...but au contraire my fellow Chasqui's, this was a race for the ages, 18 and older that is. Unknowingly I had entered into the biggest party disguised as a race...approximately 30,000 registered runners and walkers coupled with an additional 70,000 or so costume wearing, booze infested, free spirits walking the streets of San Francisco.

The race was great...down Howard to Fell and onto Ocean Beach via Golden Gate Park. What a run! The actual course was similar to the loop found in Red Rock...steady start, uphill climb, downhill cruise, and a solid finish. Anyone remotely interested in a great event, sign up for next years race. The top runners (from Kenya) all finished in around 34 minutes! I knew my run going great when a group of four male runners attached to a shopping cart, much like a dog sled, were pulling the cart with a keg and a woman 'bartender' serving drinks to fellow runners, passed me! Not only passed me but really outpaced me. After finishing the race, it came to light that this group of runners was the men's triathlon team for UC Berkley. Damn!

The participants featured in the race were wide ranging from Storm Troopers (in full gear), banana's, nudist, and my favorite...a string of about 12 people dressed in salmon costumes running the wrong way. There were people dressed in bathing suits, shower curtains, dresses, tuxedos, and anything you can think of. But not only were these people dressed up but they were carrying/hauling/pushing all sorts of kegs, floats, and shopping carts.

Well, enough of that. Hope everyone is running well and ready for the race.
