My Ragnar review

Ragnar Las Vegas 2010 - What an adventure!

Leg 12 -Lake Las Vegas 5.1 miles moderate

Took me 47 minutes so I had about a 9:10 pace. I was So anxious to run. I was the 12th runner on our team and waiting and watching everyone get through their leg first made for a long wait and I was achin' to go. The first part of this leg was up hill until I got to the entrance of Lake Las Vegas. I had never been here before so it was fun to run through and see this area. It was dark but still a beautiful place. After I went through the entrance it was all down hill - or suppose to be. I was crusin' down the hill. Felt great and thought I might beat a 9 minute mile for my average on this run. Then all of a sudden, contrary to what the race bible showed, I had to run up this giant hill on an unfinished road. I got up the hill and I hadn't seen anyone in a long time or signs and I thought maybe I had taken a wrong turn. Finally saw a Ragnar sign and I knew it was near the finish. I went for it and felt good about the run.

Leg 24 - Trail near Good Springs/Sandy Valley Race bible said 7.8 miles- Bah! VERY HARD

My first thought as I was finishing this leg about what I would say in my race report was "I don't want to talk about it". But, lets talk about it. This "trail" was more like a river bed with a few patches of dirt. Seriously, there were loose rocks the size of grapefruits all over. I must have looked like a cartoon character stumbling, swerving, tripping all over the place. My ankles were turning every which way. Twice I tripped and thought I was going to fall. Every time there were other runners around the comments were the same "This is crazy", "are you doing ok?" "Take it slow". I passed the water station and thought I was about half way through. Then just as I was trying to pick up my speed a bit I hit the ground. My head hit a rock and I was a little shaken. I got up and looked back to see if anyone had seen me fall. There was no one around. I knew my eye was cut by my eyebrow and I could feel that I already had a fat lip. I started walking slowly and trying to figure out how bad my eye was bleeding. it was dripping down my face so it must not be too bad. I looked at my Road I.D. where the last line says Day by Day - in honor of my Grandpa and I just said to myself "Finish it" So Even though still walking for the time, I picked up my speed. A girl caught up to me and asked if I was doing ok. I told her yes, I'm ok but she must have heard something in my voice and asked again. I told her I had fallen and that I thought my eye was bleeding so she stopped and checked me out. She wanted me to stop and for her to go get help but I wasn't stopping. I told her to go ahead and look for my team to tell them I was coming slowly and that I wanted wet wipes and water when I got off the trail. I took it slow and I finished the rest of the trail alternating walking and running. I guess the girl was really concerned because when I got to the road my team was putting their shoes on to come get me. I didn't want to talk at that point. I just kept going. when I got to the end I wanted to cry but I didn't. I got cleaned up a little in the medical tent and we were on to the next exchange to get some rest. While riding in the back of the truck I was able to laugh about it with my sister in law, Denise.

Leg 36 - Calico Basin to Red Rock Casino 4.8 Moderate

I was nervous about how I was going to feel running after my last leg. I started up the road out of Calico Basin and was feeling good. My dad and Brother had come out to cheer us on. I turned left onto Charleston and headed out of the Red Rock area. There was a hill I had to climb and I told myself not to walk it. I made it up and then knew it was all down hill. I was feeling a little warm and was feeling beat. I saw my brother on the side of the road and he asked me how I was doing. told him I was beat and he said "Its almost over". A little further ahead I had to stop for a red light and told myself I was going to finish strong. I had about 2.5 miles to go. I guy caught up to me at the light and we started talking about the trail run I figured I would just pace him the rest of the way We were running between 8 and 8:30. When I got to the back of the hotel and turned left I was searching for my team. I saw this sea of red come out of the crowd and they ran with my across the finish line. WE WERE DONE!

I'm glad I did it. I'll probably do it again. I love being a Chasqui. Thanks to the Duffs and Brian Walker for volunteering for our team. Thanks to Heather and Jessica for coming out to provide the Chasqui ChuQwagon for us. Thanks to Christi and Janel for helping get it ready. Thanks to Rachel for bringing out a new ride to Van 1. Thanks to all the families who came out to cheer us on! Thanks to Jordan for all the work you do to organize our team.

Let me just add: It was so much fun having my sister in law, Denise run with us for Ragnar LV. She was awesome with her 6:40 pace and a great addition to the team. She even threw in a few "that's what she said"jokes. Was worried she would call me a slacker for walking on my second leg but glad to have you there Denise!!
