I'll lay it out so you all can play it out. Yesterday about 4:30 i started my race simulation. Started on the dreadmill at LVAC and made it 3.2 miles. Kept it easy, averaged about a 8:30 pace. Ok all good.
Woke up this morning and was on the trail at 5:30, The Late Nite Beginner Trail (i gotta shorten that name). 2 laps around instead of my normal 1. I perceived myself as holding back, yet after lap 1 I looked at my Garmin and it says 31 minutes. I don't think I have ever run that loop faster than like 34 or 35 minutes. Anyway, started the second lap........
I fell apart. First part of the loop is a good little uphill. I felt horrible, how could this be? Just 2 minutes prior, not even that, I felt pretty damn good. I'm in my own little purgatory for the next mile, then thins started to look up. I hit the downhill portion and was able to lengthen out my stride a bit and things felt better. Finished up lap 2 pretty strong on the uphill finish. Ended up running 7.2 miles in about 1:05.
All that remains is a little 3 mile jaunt on the dreadmill at lunch time and race simulation is complete. I feel pretty good. Like Chasqui Matt reminded me, the altitude is a huge variable. We'll just have to throw caution to the wind.

What's the Late Nite Beginner Trail? I'm curious!
Late Night Beginner trail is part of the Mustang Trails system on the north side of state route
160. On the south side of 160 is the Cottonwood Trail system frequented by mountain bikers. At least that is how I understand it. 160 is the Blue Diamond Road extension that goes up over Mt Potosi towards Pahrump. You ought to come out some time. I post runs like that on the blog a day or 2 before long trail runs. Your more than welcome.
